John Philip Adams, 93, of Fripp Island, SC, died Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Mr. Adams was born on August 28, 1921 in rural Akron, Iowa to the late Vinton George Adams and Helen Cobb Spencer Adams.
He was raised on the family farm and served in World War II as a Flight Engineer in the Pacific Theater. After the War, John married June Walters of Flushing, NY and they raised their family on Long Island. John enjoyed an esteemed 40 year career as a Flight Engineer with Pan American Airlines.
One of his many accolades was crewing the first commercial flight from the United States to Moscow. John and June moved to Fripp Island, South Carolina in 1975 where they enjoyed a long and productive retirement. John volunteered at the Fire Department on Fripp Island between 1981-1991 and was awarded The Fire Fighter of the Year Award for 1987-1988.
He was awarded the Life Time Achievement Award for the Community and Fire Department in 1995 and he also volunteered for Pollster and Sea Rescue for Fripp Island. Survivors include one daughter, Cheryl (Bob) Martin of Sound Beach, NY and two sons, Craig (Patricia) Adams of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Scott (Beth) Adams of East Moriches, NY, 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 12 noon at All Saints Chapel on Fripp Island officiated by Reverend Jerry Hammet . Interment will follow at All Saints Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Fripp Island Volunteer Fire Department. Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
