He was pre-deceased by his parents and brother George A. Nightingale, Jr. and sister-in-law Billie Jean Nightingale. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty), his daughter, Melissa Nightingale Patton and her husband, Cornell, of Myrtle Beach, SC and grandchildren Zachary Patton and Olivia Patton.
He is also survived by his brother, David S. Nightingale, MD and wife, Patricia, of Louisville, KY, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Joel attended DuPont Manual High School, the University of Kentucky, and graduated from Kansas State University. He had a long career as a pilot with the US Air Force, Pan American Air Lines and, finally, with US Steel Corporation.
After retirement, he continued a long and faithful Christian commitment to his church, Christ Fellowship-Palm Beach Gardens, and by working to support humanitarian aid flights to the Caribbean with Missionary Flights International.
The family requests that any desired expressions of sympathy be made in the form of a donation to Christ Fellowship-Palm Beach Gardens or a . Interment will be at Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, KY at a later date.
