LADY’S ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA – Arthur Martin “Marty” Berger, 81, of Lady’s Island, died peacefully on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Bay View Manor after a long and courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Marty was born in Philadelphia, P.A. and grew up in Woodbury, N.J. Marty and his wife Donna moved to Royal Pines in December 1994 from Coral Gables, Florida.
Marty’s aviation career of 40 years started as a purser with Eastern Airlines, joining Pan American World Airways in 1955. He became a Captain of 747’s flying all around the globe until joining United Airlines in 1989 as a Flight Engineer, then retiring in 1992.
Marty enjoyed golf, fishing, classic cars and his summer home on Beech Mountain, N.C.
He was a member of the Masonic order since 1962. He was a member of the Lady’s Island Country Club, Beech Mountain Club and the Classic Car & Truck Club of Beaufort.
Marty was a loving, kind, caring and generous husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was pre deceased by his granddaughter Sarah Michele Stockwell.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 22 years, Donna “Dee Dee”; four children; daughter Patricia B. Stockwell, son-in-law John Stockwell of Gainesville, Florida; daughter Peggy Ann Plumadore, son-in-law Joe Plumadore of Miami, Florida; grandchildren Lisa and Michael Plumadore; daughter Martha Emily Hession, son-in-law Phil Hession; grandchildren Martin and Charles Hession of Kent, England; son Anthony Martin Berger, daughter-in-law Robin Berger; grandchildren Joshua and Elizabeth Berger of Ellerslie, Georgia; sister Nancy Smith of Hastings, Nebraska; brother Donald Chew, sister–in-law Cay Chew of Ocean View, N.J.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 12 at 3:00 p.m. at Copeland Funeral Service Chapel.
